Abstract

Relevance: With the intensive integration of renewable energy sources into electric power systems, the well-founded selection of the connection node and power rating of battery energy storage systems (BESS) is becoming increasingly important for ensuring their effective deployment. Comprehensive consideration of seasonal and loading conditions of the power system, active and reactive power exchange, as well as post-contingency states under the N–1 criterion, makes it possible to improve the reliability and robustness of BESS parameter selection.

Aim: Determination of the optimal BESS connection node and power conversion system (PCS) rating in the northwestern part of the Uzbekistan power system based on robust multi-criteria assessment, considering various seasonal and loading conditions, active and reactive power control capabilities, and the N–1 criterion.

Methods: The study employed multi-operating-condition simulation based on two actual seasonal operating conditions and three load levels, bidirectional BESS active power exchange, reactive power control, multi-criteria assessment, and combinatorial analysis of criterion weighting factors. A total of 44 nodes were evaluated using a model of the northwestern part of the Uzbekistan power system. The robustness of the selected solution was verified by simulating 47 common contingencies under the N–1 criterion.

Results: According to the multi-criteria assessment results, the Xorezm ORU-110 node, with a robustness score of 0,677, was identified as the most preferred BESS connection point. This node ranked first in 77,3% of the 66 combinations of criterion weights and maintained its leading position under critical N–1 contingencies. For the 47 common contingencies, a total of 1,692 successfully converged calculations were performed. The results showed that the minimum acceptable PCS active power rating was 70 MW, with an apparent power rating of 84 MVA and an available reactive power capability of 46,43 Mvar at rated active power.
